Baby Fashion and Photography
by Valerie M

A simple photograph of a baby is often very evocative; the softness of their hair and skin and the tiny proportions of the hands and feet are excellent subjects for the camera. While such images are great keepsakes, most parents will also want images of their children that express a great deal more than their simple beauty. This is usually a time when they'll be ready and willing to "dress up" a baby for a photography session or formal portrait.

Before making any fashion choices, however, parents should really consider the effects they are seeking. For instance, will the photographs be in full color or will they be in black and white? What is the setting? Will parents be included? How many children will be in the photograph? What sort of "nature" is the child already displaying?

Because children grow up so quickly, it is important to try to document them in such formal ways as often as possible, and answering the questions above can really help parents make the right choices about what sort of clothing the child will wear.

There are always going to be "trends" in fashion, as well as photography. One year it may be all about outdoor photographs and brightly colored clothing, while the next year it may be popular for babies and children to appear in a formal setting that is captured in black and white. These trends might be something to consider, but ultimately the goal is to record the child and their personality in a clear and effective way.

Obviously this means that fashion will play a strong role in the final image. So, what should your child wear for their regular photographic sittings? Trendy AND comfortable are the key factors in the selection process. For instance, many parents want a little girl to be photographed in ethereal and "princess-like" clothing and settings. Fortunately, there are retailers offering everything from tutu diaper covers to floral hats and beribboned shoes.

Usually, it is a wise idea to discuss the setting for the photographs with a photographer, or to consider where you will be taking the images of the child. This will allow you to select a few outfits that will work well with the environment. For instance, a baby girl donning one of the floral hats and tutus would look wonderful surrounded by the greens and gold hues of a garden or park.
